This is my answer to whoever asks me why I started helping in upliftment of tribal girls through basketball. It all started when I was shortlisted for a national basketball camp in Rajnandgaon, Chattisgarh. This was the first time I got the chance to play with the girls in the Chattishgarh team. Even though this national camp consisted of extremely talented players, these girls outshone us all. These well built girls were fast, agile and head-strong. Then I learnt that these girls were actually tribal girls recruited from Naxal affected areas in chattisgarh.
Mrs. & Mr. Radha Rao have been scouting and nurturing
the basketball talent among the tribal girls of Chhattisgarh since last 12
years. They have nurtured lot of girls who were selected at a different age
ranging from 11 years to 17 years.
The duo and few other persons would go to different villages
in the Naxal belt of Chhattisgarh and select girls who have agility, grit,
strength and speed required for the basketball and would bring them to the city
of Rajnandgaon. Here, they collaborated with two public school namely Yugantar
Public School and DPS, Rajnandgaon, who agreed to sponsor the boarding, lodging
and education for 60+ girls each- all free of cost! In turn these girls would
practice basketball for 8 hours a day, in addition to their regular curriculum. As per their Progress The girls would play at regional, national EVEN AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. MANY GIRLS WUD ALSO QUALIFY TO BE ADOPTED BY THE SPORTS
AUTHORITY OF INDIA. Quite a few of the girls played at the national level and joined GOVERNMENT JOBS under sports quota COMPLETELY TRANSFORMING THEIR & THEIR FAMILIES LIVES. Few of them have been selected by the INTERNATIONAL SCOUTS TOO.
